Marathon Patent Group (MARA) announced on Thursday it would bankrupt the work of bitcoin core developer Jonas Sneley. Earlier, Bitcoin paid for Schneilly’s work before the grant was knocked out last year.

“As the largest Bitcoin Mining companies, we believe it is essential to do our part to help the Bitcoin network move forward. Missing key developers like Jonas, the effectiveness and long-term adoption of Bitcoin and the consequent impact on our business. This grant will allow Jonas to continue his important work for our collective, ”said Marathon Chairman and CEO Merrick Okamoto in a press release.

Funding is important for an open source project like Bitcoin, which no organization or central entity supports, and it comes from the grassroots movement of bitcoin companies following each other’s leadership to give back to the developing community a share of their profits.

Snely has been contributing to Bitcoin Core since 2013 and his 516 commitments have made him the ninth active developer of the Bitcoin Core Code. In addition to his work on Bitcoin source code, he has Has created a code library C coding language has helped to create bitcoin applications and design bitbox hardware wallets.

In addition to these grants, Shanley has 55 separate sponsors GitHub.

Another Bitcoin developer, Joe Barbosa, withdrew his funds from Bitcoin at the same time as Shitley, but got it back when Barbosa returned in late 2020. The first one in Coinbase The Crypto Community Fund provides grants.

The condition of Shanley and Barbosa is unheard of.

Before last year, most open source developers of Bitcoin volunteered their time to work on Bitcoin software and protocols. Others were lucky enough to be hired by well-funded companies like Blockstream or Chaincode Labs, but most did not receive compensation for their work.
