Every parent wishes for a healthy child and does not lack any kind of life for him. Somewhere, due to negligence during pregnancy, infant birth defects may fall victim to Spina Bifida. The child becomes helpless due to congenital spina bifida. Dr. Pradeep Jain, associated with myUpchar, says that spinal bifida and spinal cord do not form properly. This defect is included in the category of neural tube defects. This tube is a structure of the fetus that develops into the brain and spinal cord of the infant.
Scientists consider factors such as any health problem in the child’s family, environment and lack of folic acid in the mother’s body. Also, taking the medicine for seizures during pregnancy makes the baby more susceptible to neural tube defect. Not only this, women whose blood sugar is not controlled, their babies are at risk of spina bifida. Obesity is also associated with neural tube defects in infants before a woman becomes pregnant.
There are three types of spina bifida. 1. Spina bifida aculta, 2. Meningosil and 3. Myelomeningosyl. It varies depending on the severity, size, type, location and complications of the disease. Many symptoms are seen in an infant with or after spina bifida after birth, including paralysis of the legs, fecal and urinary incontinence, lack of sensitivity to the skin, seizures, deformity in the shape of the legs and hips, and spinal twisting. Etc. Spina bifida also carries a risk of infection in the nervous system.read this also – Also create social distancing from pets, corona can spread: study
Its treatment also depends on the severity of the disease. If its type is spina bifida aculta, then it does not require treatment. These are quite mild effects. In these, the spinal cord and the structures around it remain inside the child’s body, but the lower part of the spinal cord is not formed properly.
Other types of spina bifida require surgery that can occur before birth or after birth. Surgery done before the 24th week of pregnancy is used to cure spina bifida. In this operation, the doctor opens the uterus of the mother and fixes the spinal cord of the child. This reduces the risk of birth defects. However, there is a greater risk in this process. Problems of early child birth are also greater. In post-birth surgeries, meninges are transported to the right place and open cells are closed. In this case the spinal cord grows in a normal way, due to which the membrane can be removed easily without damaging the nerves. Other types of myelomeningocephal also require surgery. In this, the doctors place the spinal cord and other tissues inside the child’s body and cover the muscles and skin.
Prevention of spina bifida is difficult, but the problem can be avoided to a great extent by having folic acid and timely tests done during pregnancy. Taking folic acid and other vitamins reduces the risk of this birth defect.
